September is not just the change of the season or the kids going back to school. September is also Self-
Care Awareness month!
Self-Care involves taking time and action to improve both your physical and mental health. Put down
your cell phone. Shut off the tv. Constant stimulation often causes stress and anxiety. Over time these
stressors can manifest into physical and mental ailments. Eliminate all distractions and let your mind
rest.
Here are just a few things seniors can consider as Self-Care:
- Keep a Gratitude Journal at your bedside and every night write down 3 to 5 things you were
grateful for that day. - Spend more time in nature. Walking on a beach or through the woods gives you the chance to
immerse yourself in nature and breathe in the fresh air. - Reconnect with old hobbies or create new ones. Older adults tend to have more free time. Why
not take up some activities that used to provide you with enjoyment and satisfaction. - Take time to see your loved ones. Invite a loved one over for dinner or call an old friend.
The benefits of Self-Care are many: - Reduce stress and anxiety
- Relieve pain
- Improve sleep quality
- Increase focus
- General sense of well being
Having spent their lives caring for others Seniors may find it difficult to indulge themselves. But now is
the time to prioritize yourself. Very often Self-Care benefits not only the individual but those around
them as well. It promotes a more balanced and positive mindset which often can be infectious!
